Outboard Motor Serial Number Yamaha: Discover the History and Features of Your Engine

New outboard motor warranty registrations must be completed by an authorized Yamaha dealership. Only a Yamaha dealer may perform the factory-specified Pre-delivery Inspection, which is a requirement for engine warranty registration. This inspection checks many important items, including that the engine(s) were rigged and are operating correctly. A Yamaha dealer is also in the best position to provide you with an explanation of operation and maintenance procedures.

Outboard Motor Serial Number Yamaha

Yamaha outboards are fitted with an identification plate (see main picture) on the port side engine mount bracket; this is the bracket that mounts the outboard to the transom of your boat. The outboard plate displays the model code, shaft length, serial number and older models also a quick reference letter that reflects 'production year' reference. Modern outboards do not show the quick reference letter.

The best way and the way in which a dealer will identify 'production year' is by entering the serial number into the Yamaha system and cross check the details with the model code. Remember this is 'production year' not year model compliance by warranty registration.

SIM Yamaha makes ordering parts quick and easy by providing two simple ways to find the parts you need: via motor model specific pages set up with just the common maintenance items, and via parts diagrams. Take note of your motor model code and serial number (Primary ID). Consider taking a picture of the identification tag on your motor to keep in your phone, or write it down somewhere, in case the identification sticker gets worn. (While you are at it, write down the three digit number on your engine key. You'll thank us for that tip later.)

The model code and serial number are located on the port side of the motor, on or near the bracket. There is also likely a manufacturing date tag on the starboard side of the engine just opposite of the ID tag.

Models manufactured in mid-2005 and later use a different model coding system. Like this F300UCA with serial number 6CE-U-1023787. Since Yamaha no longer model-years motors, there is no longer a letter in the model coding that indicates year. You will need your serial number and manufacturing date. The date ID tag is located on the opposite side of the engine.

Yamaha uses the letters and numbers that make up your model code to denote specifications of the motor. The charts below show model coding specifics for early 2005 and older motors and then mid-2005 and newer engine models.

The engine serial number (ESN) is a unique identifier of your product and the key to efficient servicing and correct ordering of parts. It can be found on decals and product plates. For the exact appearance and location on your engine, please see the operators manual. The guide we have provided shows you where to find your boat engine serial number for Yamaha Outboards, Mercury Outboards, Volvo Penta SternDrive and MerCruiser SternDrive.

For Mercury Outboard, your serial number will be located on a rectangular tag on the starboard (right) side of your motor on the transom mount. In engines 8HP and higher, the ESN is on starboard (right) side - halfway down the transom assembly, just below the engine's powerhead. For engines 6HP and lower, the ESN tag will be located on the top of the swivel bracket.

Bay has expanded its line of kits to convert many Mariner and Yamaha outboards to long or extra long shaft. Even though they cost a fraction of factory parts alone to convert standard motors to long shaft, Bay extension kits are designed and manufactured of top quality materials to give lasting reliability to your outboard motor.

1980-PresentEngines since 1980 use a two letter code at the end of the model number based on the following key :INTRODUCES1234567890For example the 'CE' at the end of 100STLCE indicate that the engine is from '89'.If your are still unsure of your engine year, search for your model number on the Johnson 1980-later serial number year chart located here.

1969-1979The actual year is found in the model number, not the serial number. For example, 150TXL78 is a 150hp engine from 1978. 65ESLR72 would be from 1972.

1980-PresentEngines since 1980 use a two letter code at the end of the model number based on the following key :INTRODUCES1234567890For example the 'ED' at the end of VE70TLED indicate that the engine is from '96'.If your are still unsure of your engine year, search for your model number on the Evinrude 1980-later serial number year chart located here.

The first serial number sold in a year becomes the beginning serial number. Serial numbers between that year's beginning serial number and the next fall into the same year. Search for your engine horsepower on the Mercury Mariner serial number year chart located here to find the beginning serial number for the range that includes your engine.

Later Model Mercury engines will have 2-digit number in a box at the lower right portion of the label. These digits coincide with the last two digits of the year in which the outboard was manufactured. For example, if an outboard was manufactured in 2010, the number "10" would appear in the box at the lower right portion of the label.

When ordering parts for a motor beyond 2005 a serial number is required to make sure correct parts are being ordered. On older models the motor model code and serial number is located on a rectangular sticker on the ports side of your motor, on or near, the bracket. 2ff7e9595c
